Mark is a chemical analyst that graduated from Ball State University in 1999 with a major in chemistry and a minor in geology. He made the Dean's List in every semester that he attended BSU with a GPA of 3.86.
Mark joined the team at HML, Inc. in 1999. He tests for diquat dibromide, glyphosate, and carbamate compounds in drinking water samples using HPLC methods. He also tests for ammonia in samples from waste treatment plants using an ion analyzer. Mark uses the ion analyzer to test for total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) in solid, wastewater, and drinking water samples after extracting them. Other responsibilities include testing for fluoride, nitrite, sulfate, and sulfide in drinking water using colorimetric methods.
When Mark was at Ball State University, he did research for Dr. Bruce Storhoff in his inorganic chemistry lab. From the summer of 1997 through the spring of 1998, Mark studied the precursors for phosphorous-containing macrocycles. He helped set up and run the reactions. Mark used a Roto-evap and high vacuum as means of purifying compounds. He used infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to analyze olecules. Working from the fall of 1998 through the spring of 1999, he studied how boron reacts with different phosphine compounds.
From the fall of 1998 through spring of 1999, Mark was president of the Students Affiliated with The American Chemical Society (SAACS). He was also a member of the Golden Key National Honor Society.
