Julie Birdsong

Julie Birdsong has been employed at HML, Inc. (Hoosier Microbiological Laboratories) since August, 2001. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry from Ball State University.

Julie is responsible for method 503 pathogen testing for enteric viruses, which requires maintenance of a continuous cell culture line. She also conducts method 503 pathogen testing for Salmonella, fecal coliforms, and helminth ova. Julie also does various testing on soil, sludge, water, wastewater, food products, and industrial products. She does membrane filtration testing for E. coli, fecal coliforms, and Pseudomonas, and she is experienced with aerobic and anaerobic plate counts.

Her general duties include preparation of various medias, maintenance of bacterial and fungal cultures, daily calibrations of lab equipment, and maintenance of log sheets and bench sheets.

She has experience operating the following equipment: light microscope, dissecting microscope, centrifuge, sonic dismembrator, spectrophotometer, air monitoring equipment, pH meter, autoclave, and analytical balance.
