MTBE Testing

Methyl Tert-butyl Ether (MTBE) is an octane booster that has been added to gasoline. It has been linked as a possible cause of cancer. A recently released United States Geological Survey (USGS) study found volatile organic compounds (VOC's) exceeded federal drinking water criteria in 6% of urban and 1.5% of rural wells. The study estimated that 42 million Americans drink contaminated water. The EPA has estimated that MTBE, a VOC, because of its persistence and mobility in water is more likely to contaminate groundwater and surface water than any other components of gasoline.
